DR. MARSHALL’S RESPONSE:
Although this system of discipline was originally developed while I was teaching at the middle school level, the principles can be used successfully with students of any age–preschool to grade 12.

DISCIPLINE without STRESS will work with anyone who has achieved enough cognitive development to reason.

DISCIPLINE without STRESS handles disruptive behavior and in the process builds self-discipline, respect for self and others, and both individual and social responsibility.

DISCIPLINE without STRESS also reduces stress for both adults and young people.

Regardless of the age of the student, the same Teaching Model is followed:

The same THREE PRINCIPLES form the basis of the DISCIPLINE without STRESS approach, regardless of the student grade level:

• Positivity
• Choice
• Reflection

The only difference between how this system is implemented with young children–as opposed to older children, adolescents or young adults–is in the adult’s choice of words. Teachers choose vocabulary appropriate to the age of their students.

For example, the descriptors of the DISCIPLINE without STRESS HIERARCHY can be adapted to the understanding level of any age group. Sample hierarchies for Primary, Upper Elementary, and Middle/High School are available on Dr. Marshall’s website.
